Model of Associated Electrical Industries (AEI) transformer group. Made by Severn lamb Ltd around 1960.
This is how the National Grid works. Power stations generate electricity at 25,000 volts. Step-up transformers increase the voltage to between 132,000 and 400,000 volts. High voltage electricity travels very efficiently through the power cables. Before electricity enters our home or workplace, step-down transformers in substations reduce the voltage to safer levels.
