Four-cylinder diesel engine, type 4L2, made by L. Gardner & Sons Ltd, Manchester, c. 1932.

This 4L2 engine was used in a dustcart in Liverpool in the 1930s and was made by L.Gardner & Sons of Patricroft. It was the first type of British diesel engine to be used successfully for road transport. Previously such diesel engines in vehicles were mostly noisy and dirty. The Gardner's 4L2 engine was to change this image, proving reliable and efficient, and it was soon being used widely.
