Single-cylinder horizontal gas engine, type KBGE, no. 193552 made by National Gas & Oil Engine Co. Ltd, Ashton-under-Lyne, 1935. Slide valve, spark ignition, speed 300 rpm, power output 6 horsepower.
After their introduction in 1867, gas engines like this were the main source of power for smaller industries. For 70 years, this cheap source of power was in common use in workshops, sawmills, and printing and food businesses.
In the museum display, this engine is shown connected to four small machine tools, as it would have been in a typical late 19th century workshop.
