Four-stroke diesel engine, Type IHD4, made by Crossley Brothers Ltd, Manchester, 1960. Poppet valve, compression ignition (with glow-wick starting), speed 475 rpm, power output 14 horsepower. Compression ignition, power output 14 horsepower.

This engine was used at the Tameside College of Technology for testing different engine loads.

To improve performance of internal combustion engines, it was necessary to make a study of various aspects of their operation. On this engine, instruments measure cylinder pressure, cooling water flow and temperature, exhaust gas temperature and fuel consumption. This information enables an assessment of power output and efficiency to be made. A load, which acts as a brake, is applied to the engine by the weighted rope placed around the flanged flywheel.
