Architecht's model of S & J Watts' warehouse, made around 1850.
This is the architecht's model of S&J Watts' cotton warehouse, which was built on Portland Street in Manchester between 1851 and 1856 by Travis and Mangnall. When it was completed, it was the largest and most decorative warehouse of its type. It is built in a palazzo style, with each floor of windows treated with a different style. Manchester's textile merchants built grand and decorative warehouses to impress customers and demonstrate their wealth. Manchester's city centre became the trading heart of the textiles industry, acting as a hub for the cloth manufactured in Manchester and across Lancashire.
