Barring engine, made by George Saxon Ltd, Manchester and used in Magnet Mill, Chadderton, Oldham, 1903.

This barring steam engine was made by George Saxon of Openshaw, Manchester. Steam powered barring engines were used to move large, very heavy flywheels of engines which could not be 'barred' over by hand. The flywheels needed to be in the right position for starting or for maintenance. Once the flywheel began to move under the engine's power, the barring engine would detach itself. George Saxon Ltd was one of the main makers of textile steam engines.
