Electrostatic generator with Nairne-type cylinder, made by Frederick Jackson & Co., Manchester.

School science teachers used machines like this to demonstrate static electricity. This example was made by Frederick Jackson & Co, of Manchester, in around 1900. The 1890 Education Act introduced science subjects to school education. Frederick Jackson set up his company in Manchester in 1866 as a laboratory furnisher and maker of chemical apparatus, having taken over the business of Mottershead & Co. The company went out of business in about 1940.
