18ct gold medal in case presented to John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown by the City of Manchester, 1919.

John Alcock piloted the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean with Arthur Whitten Brown as navigator. This pioneering flight was celebrated as a major milestone in the progress of aviation. Many organisations and places with links to the flight and the aviators celebrated and commemorated the achievement.

Alcock was born and grew up in Manchester, while Brown moved to Manchester as a young boy when his father was tasked with helping to set up the British Westinghouse factory at Trafford Park.

The city of Manchester celebrated the achievement of these sons of the city with a civic reception and presented them with this commemorative medal.
