Dummy fuel rod made by British Nuclear Fuels Plc, Springfields, 1970.

This type of fuel rod was used at Bradwell, a Magnox nuclear reactor. They consist of a bar of natural uranium clad in a magnesium alloy can. Magnesium alloy was used because of its non-oxidising properties. This led to this type of reactor being known as Magnox reactors. The rod has spiral fins and welded supports for rigidity. The top has been sectioned to show the bar of (dummy) uranium metal inside.
