Shock absorber for a Magnox Nuclear Reactor made by British Nuclear Fuels Plc, c.1965-1990.

To produce energy in a nuclear power station, rods of uranium fuel are inserted into the reactor core where nuclear fission takes place. Shock absorbers such as this one are placed in the bottom of the fuel channels. They prevent fuel rods being damaged if they are loaded too quickly.
