Dummy sample of vitrified nuclear waste, made by BNFL, Sellafield, in c. 1989.

This dummy vitrified waste was produced at British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) in Sellafield in 1989. Nuclear power stations produce waste, which is mixed with glass to make it stable. It then needs storing for thousands of years before it is safe.
