Microbestos Sample

Made:
1970-1980 in United States

Sample of Microbestos A, phenolic laminate; made in the United States by Johns-Manville Aerospace Products, 1970-1980.

Asbestos is a good thermal insulator and is heat resistant. In the 1970s, materials containing asbestos were applied to the outside of missiles to shield them from high temperatures. Plastics reinforced with chrysotile asbestos were used in rocket motor chamber liners, fin and wing structures and missile skins. Microasbestos was used as an ablative shield in the Apollo Spacecraft.
