Summator, made by Ferranti Ltd, 1940-1960.

The function of a summator is to add electrical impulses, received at random from a number of sources, in order to calculate total energy consumed and the maximum demand for power over the billing period. The need for summation metering for bulk electrical supply arose with the development of the national grid during the 1920s.
