Copper electric room heater. Made around 1914 by Ferranti Limited in Hollinwood, Oldham.

Traditional coal fireplaces got filthy and needed to be swept and cleaned regularly. Electric heaters like this Manchester-made Ferranti model were advertised as a clean alternative to coal. Advertisements aimed at housewives claimed that electrical appliances required very little upkeep and removed much of the drudgery from daily chores.
