If the inertial forces produced by moving parts in an internal combustion engine or steam engine are not balanced with counterweights or balance shafts, the imbalance can cause vibration.
Professor William Dalby was Head of Mechanical & Motive Engineering at Imperial College 1906-1931. He worked in the Admiralty Engineering lab during World War I, developing diesel engines for submarines and prototypes of gas turbine powered warships.
