Binocular stereoscopic camera no. 12, made by John Benjamin Dancer, Manchester, c.1856 and probably owned by Joseph Sidebotham in the 1860s.

John Benjamin Dancer (1812-1887) was one of Manchester's most important scientific instrument makers. He invented the twin-lens stereoscopic camera in 1853 then developed the design and patented it in 1856. Prior to this, stereo photographs were usually taken with a single lens camera which was moved a certain distance for the second photograph. Dancer thought the taking lenses should be the same distance apart as the human eyes.
