Vertical hot-air engine, made by Sir W. H. Bailey and Co. Ltd, Manchester, c.1880.
This hot air engine was made by W. H. Bailey & Co. Ltd at the Albion Works, Salford, in around 1880. Engines like this one were very popular because they were simple to make and ran silently. This Bailey engine used wood, coke, coal or any waste material as fuel. Hot air engines were safer than steam engines because the hot air was cooler than steam. Small engines like this one were popular for use in small factories and for driving light machinery.
