Hydraulic capstan drum from Liverpool Road Station, 1860-1880.

This is a capstan drum. It rotated vertically, winding a rope around the drum for the purpose of shunting (moving) railway wagons round the goods yard where there wasn't space for locomotives to operate. Hydraulic power was adopted at Liverpool Road Station in the 1860s. Hydraulic capstans were dangerous. In 1912, when this capstan was in operation, the Railway Inspectorate recorded three seperate accidents involving capstans at Liverpool Road Station.
