Fluted roller cutting machine made by Thomas Ryder and Son Ltd, Bolton c.1865
This machine is used to cut grooves into steel rollers. These rollers were part of many types of machines used to spin cotton and other textiles. The rollers are used to draft cotton fibres through the machine. This action is used to point all the cotton fibres in the same direction. This allows the fibres to be spun into a strong thread.
