Coal miner's electric cap lamp, with type R battery pack, made by Oldham & Son Limited, Denton, 1930-1960.

Oldham &Sons Ltd was founded in 1865. The company initially manufactured machinery for the hatting industry. After 1887 it began to manufacture machinery and equipment for coal mining, later battery-powered miners' electric safety lamps. Initially the company bought in the batteries for these but due to dissatisfaction with the quality of batteries supplied to them that the firm moved into the manufacture of their own batteries.
