Hydraulic pumping engine, including instrument panel, made by W. J. Galloway & Sons, Manchester, 1909. The engine was converted from steam to electric drive by the Hydraulic Engineering Co. in 1927.
Between 1894 and 1972, businesses across Manchester city centre powered machines using high pressure water, supplied by a 35-mile network of strong iron pipes hidden beneath the streets. At the turn of a tap, customers used high pressure water to power machinery, from passenger lifts to warehouse cranes.
The first pumping station opened in 1894 was at Whitworth Street. This municipal source of power was successful and demand was high. To meet the growing demand new power stations were built at Pott Street (1899) and Water Street (1909). This engine worked at the Water Street pumping station, which is now the home of the People’s History Museum. The pumping engines were steam powered at first, but converted to electricity in the 1920s.
Manchester’s hydraulic power system was most popular in the late 1920s. A peak of 600 customers included the Midland Hotel, Royal Exchange and Manchester cathedral.
With accompanying papers in the museum archive, consisting of: 1 bound photographic record of the rebuilding and rehousing of the engine; a group of 5 black & white photographs showing the engine at Water Street Pumping Station; 2 interpretation panels; 110 engineering drawings relating to the construction, maintenance and modification of the engine throughout its working life.
