Roller for a Casablanca speed frame machine

This is a rubber coated roller from a Casablanca speed frame used in the textile industry to make cotton yarn.

The rollers worked in pairs, one directly above the other, applying slight pressure to either side of the cotton sliver (untwisted fibres); this draws the cotton fibres into a denser, more elongated pattern. The process of reducing the thickness of the sliver by rollers is called drafting.
