A pirn holds a package of yarn. This one was designed to slot over a spindle within a shuttle used to weave the weft thread on a Lancashire power loom. Pirns could be cylindrical or slightly tapered.
The yarn on this pirn was spun on a spinning mule at Elk Mill, Oldham. Elk Mill was completed in 1927 and ceased production 71 years later, in 1998. Elk Mill was fitted with 42 pairs of Platt Brothers spinning mules, with a total of up to 107,240 mule spindles being wound with yarn at a time.
