In the post-second world war housing crisis the emphasis on building houses was speed and economy. This junction box was part of a wiring system which boasted that all the lighting connections needed in a small bungalow could be made in one box. Cheaply made from lightweight pressed steel by Callender's Cables it was connected to both lead and rubber cables over the course of its chequered career. The box is made of steel because it is comparatively large and large plastic pressings were expensive to make in the 1930s and 40s.
