Maquette of Boy character from The Sandman, a short animation directed and animated by Paul Berry. The Sandman (released 1992) was a Batty Berry Mackinnon Productions. Made in the UK.

The Sandman is a creepy, dark short horror film based on ‘Der Sandmann’, written by E. T. A. Hoffmann. The film's visual style is edgy and dark, characterised by jagged shapes, surreal proportions and the use of shadows and light. The film contains no dialogue but mixes an eerie score with silence and evocative sound effects.

The Oscar-nominated interpretation of the old European folktale was conceived, designed, and produced by Colin Batty, Paul Berry and Ian Mackinnon. It has won awards at festivals in Hiroshima, Annecy, Stuttgart, Ottawa and Espinho.
