Metal bicycle lamp with shade. Issued by the War Office during the Second World War.

Put that light out! During the Second World War, people experienced enforced blackouts at night. Electric lights acted like beacons to Luftwaffe bombers. The War Office even issued lamp shades to reduce light from cars and bicycles. This made the roads extremely dangerous. Unlit vehicles killed more people in the dark than aerial bombardment.
