The Avro Shackleton aeroplane was originally designed to locate and attack submarines and to help with search and rescue missions. The Shackleton was capable of flying for up to 24 hours and is equipped with bunk beds, a galley (kitchen) and a chemical toilet. It is a development of the World War II Avro Lancaster bomber.
This example, WR960, was built by Avro at Woodford as a maritime reconnaisance aircraft. It first flew in 1954. In 1972 WR960 was one of eleven Shackletons converted to Airborne Early Warning (AEW2) configuration.
Airborne Early Warning aeroplanes were developed to carry radar capable of detecting aeroplanes or missiles flying too low to be detected by ground- or ship-based radar.
