Granada TV Building sign

Glowing red on Manchester’s skyline, these letters were part of the iconic signage on Granada TV’s Quay Street building.

Independent television channel Granada first beamed into living rooms across the north of England on 3 May 1956. Granada's shows offered an alternative to the London-centric broadcasting that was dominant at the time.

From drama to documentaries Granada’s team of broadcasters created imaginative and sometimes daring programmes. Granada has broadcast groundbreaking TV over the years. Long-running series include ‘Granada Reports’ and serial dramas ‘Coronation Street’ and ‘Emmerdale’. Notable presenters Tony Wilson, Sir Michael Parkinson and Richard Madeley started their television careers with the company.

The sign was taken down in 2013 when ITV Granada moved to MediaCityUK, Salford.
