32nd America’s Cup Racing Yacht Model
- Made:
- 2004-2005 in Southampton
- maker:
- Wolfson Unit MTIA
Racing yacht test model built and used at the Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics at University of Southampton for the 32nd America's cup, 2007. Placed in a wind tunnel it is used for aerodynamics testing with the forces and drag on the model being measured to help engineers compare different designs.
In late 2004 and early 2005, a team at the Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics at the University of Southampton built and tested this model in the low speed section of one of the University of Southampton's wind tunnels. Different combinations of sails were tested to compare their aerodynamic performance. The results helped the team develop and refine their performance prediction tools.
This work was to support the development of a yacht for Emirates Team New Zealand for the 32nd America's Cup in 2007. Emirates Team New Zealand lost in the final to Alinghi.
