one of a pair of home made Bell telephone receivers, 1875-1890

One of a pair of home made Bell telephone receivers, probably made by David Edward Hughes, England, 1875-1890.

David Edward Hughes (1831-1901) was born in Britain but spent many years in the United States, where he invented a successful printing telegraph. Back in London in his later years he investigated many electrical phenomena. On reading of Bell's invention of the telephone in 1876, he soon made his own copies for experimental purposes.
