Caption on back reads: 'At Ashington Colliery, Northumberland, a year-old training scheme for pit-boys has met with great success. They are given intensive instruction in such things as mining machinery, underground working methods, safety lamps, ventilation, first aid, mining history, and even citizenship. In the pit is a special training gallery. The instructors are miners with years of experience at the coal face.
