Main body of wax anatomical model of reclining woman with removable internal organs, probably from Florence, late 18th century

This model of a female lying on a velvet cloth is inside a glass display case. The figure is made from bees-wax and hair and the front can be removed to reveal the internal organs, some of which can themselves be removed. The model was manufactured in Florence, Italy, in the late 18th century. The torso can be removed to show the muscles, blood vessels and the ribs. A second layer can then be removed to show the liver and the lungs. Removing the third layer reveals the heart, diaphragm, kidneys, stomach, pancreas, intestines and the uterus. Inside the uterus, a foetus can be seen.
