Horizontal gassing machine

Horizontal gassing machine, made by Dobson and Barlow Limited, Bolton, about 1912.

This gassing machine was used in Department of Textiles at the Bolton Institute of Technology to demonstrate to students the process of gassing, also known as singeing, by which newly spun yarn is passed through a flame to burn off loose fibres and give the yarn a smooth and even texture.
