Anthropomimetic robotic forearm and hand, built by Richard Greenhill, London, England, 1997

This prototype robotic hand’s grip was good enough to pick up a pint glass thanks to its artificial muscles. To keep the hand human-sized, the artificial muscles that control the fingers are located in the forearm, just like ours. The muscles are air muscles, working on the principle that if you inject air into an expandable tube, the tube will increase in diameter, and it will get shorter, pulling the ends closer together. This prototype was one of a sequence built by Richard Greenhill in research which led to the formation of the Shadow Robot Company, who build highly articulated robotic hands.
