A pestle pounds and grinds hard substances, spices and plants in the mortar for drug preparations. The Egyptians used pestles and mortars to mix ingredients for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. The small size of this example suggests it prepared small amounts of cosmetics or expensive luxury goods.
