Large formaty, hand-painted mechanical lantern slide used at the Royal Polytechnic Institution about 1860-78. Rat Eater painted by Childe and Doubell, 66, Vauxhall Walk, Lambeth, October 17th 1868. Large format effect slide of a boy sleeping in bed. A separate piece of glass is attached to a pivot that makes the boy’s arm move when operated. A separate (unattached) glass disk is included with rats painted on. This may be part of slide, to make rats crawl over the bed when operated, but there is no pulley mechanism to operate the disk. Disk fits in gap at bottom of frame. The boy’s mouth is not open, so he cannot swallow the rats!
