Photograph entitled 'Paul and Virginia', taken by Julia Margaret Cameron in 1864. Albumen contact print from wet collodion negative. This photographic study of William Frederick 'Freddy' Gould (born 1861) and Elizabeth 'Topsy' Keown (born 1859) forms part of the Herschel Album, created by Cameron for her friend Sir John Herschel (1792-1871). The inspiration behind this photograph are the eponymous characters from Bernadin de Saint-Pierre's 1787 romance 'Paul et Virginie'.
