Photograph entitled 'Carlyle Like A Rough Block Of Michel Angelo's Sculpture' taken by Julia Margaret Cameron in 1867. Albumen contact print from wet collodion negative. This photographic portrait of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) forms part of the Herschel Album, created by Cameron as a gift for her close friend Sir John Herschel (1792-1871). Thomas Carlyle was the most celebrated historian of his day. His most popular work, 'The French Revolution' was published in 1837.
