Photograph entitled 'Carlye Profile' taken by Julia Margaret Cameron in about 1867. Albumen contact print from wet collodion negative. This print forms part of the Herschel Album, created by Cameron for her friend Sir John Herschel (1792-1871). Thomas Carlyle was the most celebrated historian of his day. His most popular work, 'The French Revolution', was published in 1837.
