'The Wild Flower', 1867
Photograph entitled 'The Wild Flower' taken by Julia Margaret Cameron in 1867. Albumen contact print from wet collodion negative. This photographic study of Mary Ryan (1848-1914) forms part of the Herschel Album, created by Cameron for her friend Sir John Herschel (1792-1871). The title of this photograph probably refers to a line from William Blake's poem 'Auguries of Innocence': 'To see a world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wild flower'.
