Machine Robot with box packaging, manufactured by Horikawa, Japan, 1963

Machine Robot was a popular toy robot, able to walk and swing its arms, with flashing lights and rotating gears in its chest. The robot first appeared in 1963 and demonstrates the role of robots in toy form and used in other mass media to shape public expectations of what robots might look like in future.
