Atom Robot, manufactured by Yoshiya, Japan,1950s
The friction-driven Atom robot by Yoshiya was well decorated with colourful lithorgraphy and considerable detail. It had a 'mystery crank action' as described on the box, so that the robot would start unexpectedly when wound up. Its manufacture from tin is representative of the earliest phase in toy robot manufacture, before plastic moulding became common-place. This makes the Atom Robot an significant early contributor to the toy robot genre.
