Mechanic Robot, manufactured by Yonezawa, Japan, 1970-1975.

This is the Curator of Mechanical Engineering's favourite toy robot out of the Science Museum's entire collection. The display in the robot's chest is quite mesmerising, with gears rotating in one direction and lights behind rotating in the other. The face with no features is also curiously sci-fi. The movement is the standard routine of stepping forwards, the torso rotating, and then walking forward beginning again, against a backdrop of sound effects while the body rotates.
