Bronze statuette of Joseph Lister, after George Henry Paulin, 1924-1930
Joseph Lister (1827-1912) was the pioneer of antiseptic surgery. Lister is shown here in academic robes, perhaps in recognition of his career as Chair of Surgery at Glasgow University (1860-1869), Professor of Clinical Surgery at Edinburgh (1867-1877) and Professor of Surgery at King’s College London (1877-1892).
A similar but larger version of a statue of Lister in academic robes, sculpted by George Henry Paulin (1888-1962), is in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow. The park was a place Lister visited often while working at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he tried and tested his ideas.
