Selection of writing implements, three dip pens, and a lead pencil. Exhibited within the Lower Wellcome room set reconstruction No.38 'At the Dentist in 1890'

While it is fairly straightforward how pens work today, dip pens do not have internal reservoirs like most modern pens do, so the nib must be dipped into a bowl of ink to work. This would have been a very messy and time-consuming process.
