Clock-watch by an unknown maker, Germany, c.1580. Circular case made from gilt-brass which is pierced & chased. Later pendent. Silvered dial, with engraved centre and Roman numerals with touch pins. Steel hand. The movement has a striking train, the bell of which is fitted to the back of case. Verge escapement, with later balance cock, balance spring and escape wheel (c.1700). The wheels are made from steel, with the exception of the escape wheel, which is made of brass. No spring barrels. The watch originally contained a stackfreed, used to even out the power of the mainspring, now missing. Under the top plate are the very small letters A.L.Z.K.
Originally part of the collection of the Reverend Henry Nelthropp, and donated by Nelthropp to the museum of Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1894.
