Eight-day marine chronometer by Barrauds, London, c.1822. Gimballed mahogany box, with brass plaque on lid, engraved 'Ship, Perseverance, W Mellish Esqre'. Missing ivory number tab to front. Within the glass of the lid are instructions by the chronometer-makers Brockbank and Atkins for how to wind and keep a chronometer. Engraved and silvered dial, with subsidiary seconds dial and aperture for 'up-and-down' indicator. Signed on the dial 'Barrauds, London, 997'. Movement with spring detent escapement, two-arm balance with stops limiting movement and barrel raised above top plate. Fixed winding key. Signed ‘Barrauds Cornhill London 997’ on movement. Bequeathed to the Museum of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers by Samuel Elliot Atkins, 1898. Clockmakers' Museum No. 617
