Spring driven clock by Edward East, London, 1663 – 1665. Matted dial with engraved central rose and applied chapter ring. Steel hour and minute hands. 8-day striking fusee movement, with flanged barrels and verge escapement with short pendulum. The outside count-wheel is also engraved with a rose. Signed on the back-plate ‘Eduardus East Londini’.
An early example of a London-made pendulum clock. In remarkable condition for its age, this clock has indicated the time and struck the hours for over 350 years. Edward East (1602 – 1696) served as Master of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1645 and 1653. He was appointed Chief Clockmaker to the King in 1660. Bequeathed by David N.
