Shrieval badge and gold chain Presented to Gilbert Edgar CBE, Queens Sheriff 1964 by the Clockmakers Company and others. The chain is half of that commissioned for Sir David Salomons, 1st Baronet, when when he was made Sheriff in 1835. The other half is regularly worn by the Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers.
In April 1924 the renowned watch collector Sir David Salomons 2nd Bt, nephew of Sir David Salomons, 1st Bt (the first Jewish Sheriff and later the first Jewish Lord Mayor of London), gave his uncle’s very long 1835 shrieval chain and clip to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, to embellish their Master's badge.
In June 1963 when Gilbert Edgar, a considerable benefactor of the Company was elected Sheriff, the Court of the Company voted £250 towards the cost of his shrieval chain. In July it decided to go further, and in view of the Edgar’s Jewish faith, offered him Salomon’s chain as a gift. Gilbert Edgar accepted the gift, but only on condition that he could present the Company with a chain more suitable for the Master’s use. He therefore split the Salomons’ chain, using part of it for his shrieval chain, and part for the Master’s chain, interlinked with substantial new gold and enamel pieces. He later presented his shrieval badge and chain to the Company, which now forms part of the Clockmakers' Museum collection. The other half remains with the Company and is used as part of the Master's chain.
