George Atkins was a partner in the firm of Brockbanks & Atkins, chronometer makers of Cornhill. He served as Clerk of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers from 1809 to 1841 and later as its Master in 1845-1846. The portrait was commissioned by the Court of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1852, when Atkins was 85 and ‘Father of the Company’.
